Bloom Where You’re Planted: Personal Growth
I remember as a kid counting down the days until summer vacation, eagerly waiting for the last day of school. Summer meant sleeping in, having few responsibilities, spending time with friends, and simply enjoying the freedom of the season. As I've gotten older, though, summer has started to feel a little different. For many of us, summer brings its own set of expectations and pressures. We may feel like we should be more productive, travel more, spend more time with friends, tackle projects around the house, or make the most of every sunny day. Instead of feeling restful, the summer months can sometimes leave us feeling like we're falling behind. In a season that's supposed to feel light and carefree, it's easy to forget that growth doesn't require a perfect schedule or perfect circumstances.
Growth isn’t exclusive to when we’re making big changes or crossing off every item on our to do list. We aren’t only growing when we’re making exciting plans or squeezing every ounce out of every single day. More often, growth happens quietly—in the small choices we make and the consistent efforts we put forth. Growth isn’t just landing a new job, going on a fun-filled vacation, or feeling happy every day. Growth can be going on a walk after a long day, setting a healthy boundary or simply allowing yourself to be where you are.
There’s a quote that says, “Flowers don't wait for perfect weather before they begin to grow”. In the same way, we don’t have to wait until things are “perfect” before we begin caring for ourselves or working toward the person we want to become. It can help to ask yourself, “What can I nurture today?”
Whether it’s a friendship, your physical or mental health, or nurturing a hobby you enjoy, focusing on things in your control today gives us a sense of purpose, peace and contentment. We often underestimate the power of small, consistent choices, but over time those little moments become the foundation for meaningful growth.
So this summer, give yourself permission to bloom where you are planted. You don't have to have the perfect schedule, the perfect circumstances, or the perfect season to continue growing. Sometimes the smallest step you take today is exactly what you need to flourish tomorrow.
Here are some small ideas to help foster self growth:
☐ Go for a 15-minute walk.
☐ Call a friend.
☐ Read one chapter of a book.
☐ Drink more water.
☐ Sit outside without your phone.
☐ Spend time in prayer or reflection.
☐ Listen to your favorite music.
☐ Try a new hobby.
☐ Practice saying "no" to something that drains your energy.
☐ Rest without feeling guilty.
